The Company You Keep

Robert Redford misfires in what should be a more powerful drama about reformed leftist terrorists from the 1960s, rattled out of hiding decades later by a snooping journalist. Redford has been down this road before, though, and when the institution of government goes up against the press, the Sundance Kid normally leans all the way to the side of the press. In The Company You Keep, that’s one reporter (Shia LaBeouf), who in just a few days, roots out FBI fugitives who have managed to elude capture for all these years. Sure. The shame of it all, despite the fact that LaBeouf does a pretty good job here, is that there’s so much more intrigue about the retired Weather Underground bombers—Redford, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie—but Redford directs it as one plucky reporter’s quest for simple answers to questions that are far more interesting when they’re difficult.
