The truth can be stranger than fiction, and Tabloid provides even more evidence for that claim. In the hands of documentary filmmaker Errol Morris, seemingly any story pops immediately to life, and after a decade of more-serious work, Morris has returned to the kind of oddity that launched his career more than 30 years ago. His latest recounts a strange story of love and obsession that made big headlines in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. Joyce McKinney, a one-time beauty queen who devolved into an S&M model, flew to England and either rescued her boyfriend from an evil cult, or kidnapped her boyfriend while he was on a Mormon mission. Morris’ execution is flawless, and considering that all he really has to work with is old pictures and three or four current interviews, that should not be undersold.
