Syriana is sort of Three Days of the Condor crossed with The Parallax View fertilized by Traffic and then going on a date with The Ugly American. It’s also an extremely well-constructed political thriller that may be too complex for the average 12-year-old. Nonetheless, this tale of corrupt oil companies, assassinations, attempts at political reform, family tragedy and, like, 14 other things benefits not only from a great cast (George Clooney, Jeffrey Wright, Matt Damon, Christopher Plummer, Chris Cooper and the incomparable Alexander Siddig), but from some of the most intricate plot-weaving I’ve seen since the whole Iran-Contra thing. Well worth checking out, but make sure you’re ready for two hours and six minutes of crisply written, brilliantly acted and densely packed information.
