Elf. Kick-off your holidays with one of the most quotable and newest additions to the Christmas canon. A human grows up thinking he's an elf, and then moves back to the city and tries his best to fit in. If you haven't seen this, go ahead and watch it: you'll probably understand a lot more of the holiday jokes your friends are sharing on Facebook. Be advised: You have to like Will Ferrel when watching this movie, because he dominates just about every scene. The Loft
Spirited Away. The movie that proved your weird, Japan-obsessed friend actually has pretty good taste in movies. An animated whirlwind of folklore, soul-searching, and some of the most beautiful artwork to be found on film. If you haven't seen it before, do yourself a favor: check it out, and for a few hours, become a kid lost in a world of tea lights, spirits, and dreams about flying. There's a reason it's the highest grossing Japanese film of all time. Showing Thursday, Nov. 23, through Sunday, Nov. 26.
A Hard Day's Night. Cut your hair into a mop top, grab your favorite off-time drummer, and a tab or two of LSD, and come on down to a sing-along showing of the Beatles' classic rock n' roll musical. There will also be a music video pre-show and a costume contest! So whether you want to dress up as Paul, Ringo, or whoever Mean Mr. Mustard is, you're set. Oh, and the movie's music is pretty good, too. Showing Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
The Stuff. What do you get when you combine large scale food production, a conspiracy involving big business and the government, and mindless shoppers? If you answered: an average day in the United States, you're correct. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about a prime cult horror flick filled with slop and slime and screams: an evil mass-market frozen yogurt turning shoppers into zombies! The perfect fodder for all you conspiracy nuts and social critics. Monday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m.
Insecta. With help from the UA Department of Entomology, you can see your favorite creepy crawlies in more detail than ever before. And these ones sting, too! This film follows the lives of three insects and is equal parts art and science. Included, there is also a panel discussion with the creators of the movie. (Un)fortunately, they're human.
