Music and Lyrics

Writer/director Marc Lawrence’s latest film overflows with charm and wit, thanks to the clever dialogue and lead performances. Hugh Grant co-stars as a former member of a saccharine ’80s boy band whose has-been status has climaxed with the onset of desperation, county fair appearances and self-loathing. In a last-ditch attempt to overturn his downward spiral, the comeback kid makes a deal with a teen singer to write a winning song and tour with the pop princess. However, Grant’s character has perpetual writer’s block. Enter Drew Barrymore’s quirky character, an only-in-New York City substitute plant waterer whose knack for poetic lyricism saves the day. Grant’s quick one-liners, impeccably waxed chest and rhythmic pelvic thrusts in tight jeans combine with Barrymore’s relentless cuteness to hit all the right notes.
