This tiny Flemish film offers powerful performances and technically stunning cinematography. The story concerns a 41-year-old mother of three (Barbara Sarafian) who meets and monkey-dances with a 29-year-old trucker (Jurgen Delnaet). What’s nice about this film is that Sarafian looks like a 41-year-old mother of three, and Delnaet acts like a 29-year-old trucker. There’s an overwhelming realness to the characters, even if the situations become a bit contrived. Most importantly, Moscow, Belgium shows that ordinary, unbeautiful people can be compelling in everyday situations, even if they don’t have mutant powers and rocket bikes.
