Through the lush frame of Y La Bamba, singer/songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza weaves together tales narrating the experience of a Mexican-American woman in modern America. The contemporary sounds sift in via moody production and indie folk elements, but the roots are there as well: Mendoza's singing style, the Latin-tinged melodies, the spirituality. Sometimes her tales are faint and heartbreaking, some are melodic and groovy, but all of them are noteworthy.
