TUCSON FILM AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
The third Tucson Film and Music Festival runs Aug. 31 to Sept. 3. The film side of the festival will include an eclectic mix of documentaries, features, short films and music videos, all either music related and/or related to the Southwest in some way. Films will play at a variety of venues; the lineup and venues will be announced within the next two weeks. All music will be at Hotel Congress, which is also the festival headquarters. Tickets for the film festival will range from $5 to $10, and badges from $20 to $30. Check the Festival Web site for more information and for an upcoming list of films and venues.
LATINO PRODUCERS ACADEMY
The Latino Producers Academy returns to Tucson for the fifth consecutive year Aug. 7-17. Hosted by the local chapter of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and co-produced by the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and the UA's School of Media Arts, the academy will host more than 100 filmmakers and producers who will be developing feature projects under the guidance of industry professionals. NALIP is looking for local photographers to help document the event; anyone interested can contact Ben Lopez by email. PAN LEFT BLOG PARTY
Tucson's progressive video collective, Pan Left Productions, is launching a new video blog where members will be posting their work. To celebrate, they are having a launch party at the Dry River Community Center from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 11. The site will be activated on the night of the party. Dry River is at 740 N. AWARD-WINNING VIDEO
UA School of Media Arts 2006 alum Yaniv Fituci has produced an award-winning music video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers for their song "Charlie." CAST/CREW CALL
Local director/producer Pearry Reginald Teo still has a call out for local cast and crew members for his next film project, The 13th Hour. The 13th Hour is a two-part series that will be released directly to DVD. The production company owned by Teo and his partner Chad Michael Ward, Teo/Ward Productions LLC, is casting and hiring crew through September; filming will be in Tucson in October and November. IFASA MEETING
The August meeting of the Independent Filmmakers Association of Southern Arizona (IFASA) will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, at Access Tucson, 124 E. Broadway Blvd. The meeting will feature a presentation on insurance and payroll services for filmmakers. CINEMA LA PLACITA
Cinema La Placita screens classic films at 7:30 p.m., every Thursday through October. 'BULLITT' AT THE FOX
The Fox Tucson Theatre has a full schedule of films on Saturdays in August, including an Aug. 4 screening of the Steve McQueen classic Bullitt that will include a vintage car show in front of the Fox. Unless otherwise noted, all evening screenings are at 7:30 p.m. and cost $8 general, or $6 for students, seniors and active-duty military. The Fox is at 17 W. EVENTS AT THE LOFT
· Polyester in Odorama: This showing of John Waters' 1980 faux melodrama comedy of suburban Baltimore dysfunction features the unique but dubious scratch-and-sniff "Odorama" card that lets you smell Baltimore as you watch the film; 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28; 1 p.m., Sunday, July 29; $6.· Cinema Lounge: Cinema Lounge is a new monthly event that focuses on Arizona filmmakers. July's kickoff event was a huge success, with a full house for the debut of Ben Lopez's La Venganza. The next Cinema Lounge will be Tuesday, Aug. 21, starting with a reception at 6 p.m.
· Grease sing-along: Three original cast members from the musical will be at the Loft at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Aug. 24 and 25 for a Grease sing-along. Edd "Kookie" Byrnes, Annette Charles and Eddie Deezen will all be on hand to sign autographs and talk about Grease. There is also a costume contest and Grease goodie bags; $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $10 for Loft members.
Also, don't forget First Friday Shorts (9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3; $5), Mondo Mondays (Mondays at 8 p.m. , $2) and Cult Classics (Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. , $5).
