Will Smith plays the title character, never cracking a smile. He’s an alcoholic superhero who doesn’t know who he is, specializing in terrorizing criminals rather than simply bringing them to justice. When he saves the life of a public-relations specialist (Jason Bateman), the PR man tries to return the favor by getting people to love Hancock. This process involves Hancock willingly going to prison and wearing an X-Men-type suit. The film has some hilarious moments, while Smith and Bateman make for a fine screen duo. Charlize Theron is also good as Bateman’s worried wife. The film is definitely a different type of summer blockbuster, and it’s just another example of how strong of a movie star Smith really is. It also contains a sight gag that had me laughing hard.
