In the 1960s, a standard sitcom setup involved a wacky wife who was just a little bit stupid and who needed to be rescued from misadventures by her more-knowing and well-grounded husband. Then came Bewitched, where the wife was actually the more worldly and powerful one, and she was always one step ahead of her feckless but lovable spouse, manipulating events so as to protect his fragile ego. Nora and Delia Ephron, best known for You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, decided to take this formula and stand it on its head by remaking Bewitched with a childishly naïve and stupid female lead, and an evil and stupid male lead. Yes: In their version, everyone is an idiot! Of course, the plot follows the standard boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, girl-manipulates-reality-with-satanic-powers formula, but it does so with little motivation and fewer laughs.
