Transportation sales tax failure

READERS' PICK: Smilin' Bob Walkup put forward a plan to raise the sales tax to pay for road construction--and he got run down even worse than those who had tried it a decade earlier. We had plenty of reasons to say no, from the extensive spending on the edge of town to the small slice of the pie dedicated to public transit. But we most dreaded the proposal to tunnel Grant Road beneath Campbell Avenue, destroying a place people live, work and shop simply to eliminate a few seconds of rush-hour delay for motorists who don't even live in the city. Walkup can't wait to get on the road again--he's already completed a listening tour of the city to hear suggestions from the voters. Here's a few: forget about the grade-separated intersections and charge a dog-gone impact fee.
