FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT
No that's not the number of pints you should have at Borderlands Brewing Company on Thursday, July 16, though I wouldn't blame you if you had a couple. Instead, you should go to the brewery, located at 119 E. Toole Ave., that night for an evening of jazz. Angelo D. Versace and his group of musicians from UA's music school will be setting the mood with some horns, a stand-up bass, the vibes and more.
Don't worry if you can't make it in this week, though. The band will be performing live at Borderlands on the first and third Thursday of every month from now until September 17. Music kicks off for each event at 6 p.m. and it's free to watch, which should you some extra cash to put towards those tasty, sustainably brewed, local beers.
IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP
Dip your toe into the pool of indie and underground hip hop on Friday, July 17 when Big Meridox hosts While You Slept. This month's performers include a line-up of artists from all over including Gully's World (OH), Too Tall (BC) and Tucson's Grey Tooth. DJ Smash Lames (a.k.a. Pike Romero of the Scratch Shack) will be guest DJing for the evening as well.
You can catch all While You Slept has to offer at The Flycatcher (340 E. Sixth St.) on Friday with doors at 9 p.m. The show is free and it's a 21 and over event.
HAVANA NIGHTS
While we all wait (maybe not so patiently) for the opportunity to legally fly to Cuba for vacation, you can be briefly transported to the island by way of the Latin orchestra known as ¡Cubanismo!. Led by trumpeter Jesús Alemañy, formerly of the iconic Sierra Maestra, ¡Cubanismo! is known for putting on a vibrant show with that vintage big band sound that makes Cuban music as nostalgic as it is intoxicating. Embellished by a full brass section, congas and more, the music is big to say the least.
Put on your dancing shoes and head to Rialto Theatre (318 E. Congress St.) on Sunday, July 19 when ¡Cubanismo!. hits the stage starting at 8 p.m. You can find tickets for the show ($25 in advance or $27 the day of), along with more information, on the Rialto Theatre website at www.rialtotheatre.com.
