Phoenix's psych punk band Destruction Unit are maybe one of the biggest acts to come out of Arizona in the past few years and with good reason. Their energetic live shows meld moody vocals with droney, noisy layers of instrumentation that's not quite psych, not quite punk, not quite ambient and not quite post-punk, but rather some unique blend of all of it that is as danceable as it is intense.
You can double up on your Destruction Unit time this Thursday, June 11 at Solar Culture Gallery (31 E. Toole Ave.) and then later at Club Congress (311 E. Congress St.). At Solar Culture, the band will be joined by DJ's from the Ascetic House Collective, which includes members of Destruction Unit, as well as Lenguas Largas and the first-ever live performance from Hikikomori. That all ages show begins at 8 p.m. and is $8 at the door to get in. Then, at midnight, 21 and over Destruction Unit fans can head to Club Congress for a special Opti Club featuring the band's drummer Andrew Flores performing as Jock Club. Opti Club is free to attend every Thursday all summer long.
