This week we’ve been introducing you to the bands playing at this year’s Festival en el Barrio, and local act Sun Bones (formerly known as Boreas) is one tenth of the significant talent slated to take the stage on March 24.

It’s clear that Sun Bones already have their hometown’s endorsement - they won Up-and-Coming Artists of the Year at the 2012 TAMMIES - but members Evan Casler, Sam Golden, Bob Hanshaw and Seth Vietti have musical influences that extend far beyond the borders of the Old Pueblo, naming Radiohead, Paul Simon, Animal Collective and the Beach Boys as musical muses on their website.

But don’t be fooled, the Sun Bones, who only recently changed their name in February, have a sound all their own: as a “classically-trained rock band with lush vocal harmonies, a fierce DIY streak and a willingness to plunge into a wide range of musical styles,” described in their website bio, the band builds a signature sound through unrestrained vocal progression, plucked and whistled melodies and lyrics that range from tongue-in-cheek to downright poetic.

Their most recent album, Kickstarter Songs, was released on Feb. 23, 2012, and can be streamed in its entirety here. Each song was conceived “entirely from other people’s ideas,” a project that stemmed from a 2011 West Coast tour Kickstarter campaign, where fans of the band could “commission a song for $30 about anything (they) wanted.” Each song is as vastly different as the people, places and ideas that inspired them.
