Coffee, Culture and Community

The recently opened El Ojito Springs Center for Creativity and Coffeehouse serves up free-trade coffee and organic food daily. Most nights, there's live music, poetry or an open mic. And coming soon will be plays and art exhibits at 452 S. Stone Ave.; 624-4800. The coffee house is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m.; closes at 1 a.m. on weekends; open Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

Diamond Janos Wilder

What a coup for Janos Wilder as he recently received some coveted awards from AAA. Janos Restaurant received a Four Diamond Award, and Kai Restaurant at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort and Spa in Chandler--where he is the consulting chef--has been awarded the hospitality industry's highest rating with the AAA Five Diamond Award. Janos Restaurant received its first Four Diamond Award in 1993. Kai is the only new Arizona restaurant and one of only six in the United States to be added to the prestigious Five Diamond list, marking the first time in history any Sheraton property has received this exclusive award. No other AAA Five Diamond winners have been Native American-owned or operated.

More Diamonds in the Tucson Sky

Four Diamond awards have also gone to Acacia at St. Philip's, Anthony's in the Catalinas, the Arizona Inn, Primo at the JW Marriott Starr Pass and the Gold Room at Westward Look Resort. Once again, the Ventana Room at Loews Ventana Canyon received the Five Diamond Award. Four diamond lodging includes the Arizona Inn, JW Marriott Starr Pass, Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, Westin La Paloma and the Lodge at Ventana Canyon. Tucson has no Five Diamond lodging.

Canned Foods for New Beginnings

As the holiday season approaches, many Tucson women and children are in need. Canned goods will be distributed through New Beginnings, a local nonprofit organization that helps homeless women and children become economically self-sufficient through stable housing. The canned food drive started Nov. 20 and lasts for two months. Canned food may be dropped off at 4605 E. Speedway Blvd., 405 E. Wetmore Road and 2002 E. Irvington Road.
